More than 13 million people in the United States, both male and female- young and old experience a form of incontinence. Incontinence is defined as the involuntary loss of bladder or bowel control. Urinary incontinence is much more prevalent and is frequently under-reported, under-diagnosed, under-treated, and erroneously conceived to be a part of the aging process. Urinary incontinence is not a disease but rather a symptom caused by everyday habits, underlying or pre-existing medical conditions. However, you do not have to embark on this journey alone, with the aide of a medical professional, and our highly trained representatives, you can gain control of this symptom and ease your discomfort.

Types of incontinence include:

  • Stress incontinence: this is the loss of urine when you exert pressure/stress on your bladder through sneezing, laughing, exercising, or lifting something heavy. The sphincter muscle of the bladder is weakened.

    • In women, stress incontinence can occur from physical changes during pregnancy, after

    • childbirth, and menopause.

    • In men, the removal of the prostate gland can lead to stress incontinence.

  • Overflow incontinence: the inability to completely empty your bladder causing you to frequently or constantly dribble urine. This type of incontinence commonly occurs in people with a damaged bladder, blocked urethra, or nerve damage caused by diabetes and possibly for men with prostate gland problems.

  • Urge incontinence: the involuntary loss of urine caused by a sudden, intense urge to urinate. The bladder muscles contract rapidly giving you no warnings and not enough time to reach the bathroom. This type of incontinence can be caused by urinary tract infections, bladder infections, strokes, or other types of nervous system damages. It is also referred as a condition known as overactive bladder if no other known causes are found.

  • Mixed incontinence: the combination of symptoms from more than one type of urinary incontinence.

  • Functional incontinence: occurs more frequently in older adults with either a physical or mental impairment that refrains them from reaching a bathroom in time. For example, an adult with severe arthritis not being able to unbutton their pants quickly enough.

  • Gross total incontinence: usually caused by an anatomical defect, spinal cord or urinary system injuries. Urine is uncontrollably leaking throughout the day and night in large volumes. The bladder essentially has no storage capacity.
